Unfortunately, after updating to Firmware 3.0.1 through the 8BitDo website, the controller now doesn't function whatsoever and is unable to connect to a PC or be put into recovery mode.
A shame as the actual controller feels great in the hands, is lightweight and has both fantastic sticks and a D-Pad. Given 8BitDo's usual quality I'm chalking this up to bad luck more than anything. The analogue triggers are also great for their use in PC gaming.
But my current advice to other would-be purchasers of this controller would be on holding off on firmware updates for the forseeable future.
Edit: Since being issued a replacement by Amazon within 3 days (speedy service!) I have since used this controller (without updating) issue-free.
It is responsive, comfortable and an easy recommendation over the perennially plagued Joy-Con which continue to suffer with drift issues.
I've bumped this review to 4 stars due to the quality of the controller but I am still wary of the potential issues arising from firmware updates.
I bought this after watching a youtube video but was very skeptical. I have a switch pro controller and like it however the one down side for me with the pro controller is the layout. I bought this as I prefer the layout it uses especially as a long time playstation user and always loved the ps contollers.
However I wasn't expecting much from it, was expecting cheap plastic, short battery life and general problems.... oh how wrong was I. This controller is AMAZING! once you get it out the box you can instantly feel the quality of the controller and that was the first thing to 'Wow' me. After reading the instructions and downloading the software to have a play with the settings (you really don't need to change a thing but it's nice to have) I set it up on my switch and it works flawlessly.
After a week or so I decided to start my play through of Zelda Botw (finally) and I got hooked on the game, one day I was playing for about 5 - 6 hours straight and thought to myself I better charge my controller thinking the battery wont be great on it, but to my complete surprise the controller had 60+ percent left still, I can manage a full days gaming on this controller and still have change in the battery.
I have this connected to my switch and pc and can change which it's connected to very simply, it has all the functionality you need from a controller and I really can't recommend it enough. If you love the pro controller you will love this more, if you hate the pro controller then this is the better alternative. In my opinion this isn't just the alternative to the pro controller... this is the better controller.
This is a £60 controller for way cheaper, don't hesitate if you are shopping around for a switch controller, you will not be dissapointed!
Update - Forgot to add that these controllers don't have nfc support for amiibo's, not worth losing a star for but if they decided to do an Rev.2 then this is something that they should definitely add and really would seal the deal as an Pro controller replacement.
I bought this for a handheld 3DS like android device called the GPD XD+ for emulators android games and it also plays stuff like Doom 1 and 2 that I like to play maps I download with however it has the opposite A and B and opposite X and Y controls to the built in controller so either I gotta remember to use opposite controls everytime I swap from its built in controls handheld and opposite controls with this on a TV but if I wanted to do that I could buy a controller nearly half it's price for the same effect
I bought this to solve the problem with its remapping I would just swap these buttons with its remapping software job done they both operate the same but no it doesn't allow android mode remapping and if you put the controller in switch and xinput modes the right thumb stick doesn't work right and uses a different input method and means you have to remap the controls in game EVERY TIME you swap between this and the built in controller and that's a new nightmare
AVOID if you want/need to remap on Android. Otherwise its a REALLY good controller for switch/Xbox/PC just be warned remapping on Android is non existent and a huge shame just buy a cheaper controller for Android devices
Unfortunately, the unit I received had almost unreadable button/selector labels. It was barely visible feint black writing on a black controller, so I sent it back. If you don't mind not being able to see the A, B, X, Y and SELECT/START button labels, then this may not be an issue.
It's such a good controller that I've ordered the white with purple buttoned version to replace it.
The controller is a joy to hold for hours on end, it is very comfortable and also has analog triggers. Buttons in general feel high quality and I love the retro look. Another huge positive is the versatility, used it on Switch and PC mostly and had no issues with connectivity. Other noteworthy features include rumble, motion controls, software for customising controls and the ability to use batteries if ever needed. Just such a shame in the end, I was hoping the dpad issues were just manufacturing errors but three times in a row leads me to believe it is just poor design. As much as I want to own one of these I don't think I will bother pursuing a fourth purchase.
If the dpad was fixed in place and had a more rigid feel this would be my favourite controller ever and I would probably own mutliple versions for when mates come over. It's so close to being perfect but the scratchy, free roaming dpads were a deal breaker that I could not ignore despite my best efforts.
