The story in this game isn't the best story out there but holds together nicely and has a good line of characters. The story is linear and you do not get to make any choices or go out of the pretty small confines of the map for any of you wondering.
Overall I would recommend you pick up this game if you do not mind it being only a 6 hour length game. What you will get is a satisfying experience and a story that keeps your interest throughout.
But as a game, Ryse disappoints. All you do is move from fight to fight. I was hoping for something a little more Assassin's Creed / Uncharted / Tomb Raider - at least the ability to interact with the environment, climb or even jump. But, no, you simply move about, automatically climbing or jumping as required by the environment.
The fight sequences are very well animated and the executions are entertaining and brutal. In terms of sheer spectacle, Ryse delivers, but as a game to sit and play for any length of time, it is boring, repetitive and the campaign is way too short. Had this game been on an older platform it would have got one star.
As expected the story isn't a rich tapestry of Shakespearean quality writing, in its essence it's a revenge fantasy equal to that of Ridley Scott's Gladiator. It is basically Gladiator the game.
The game play is fun, for something described as 'Quick-time event simulator' or Quick-time even the game' it really is quiet satisfying pressing a button and slicing of a limb from a dirty barbarian. Teaming up with a friend in multilayer can leave you with some fun experiences but after a few hours you'll have done everything there is to offer.
Overall its a tech demo but a fun one, don't expect much and don't pay full price and then you'll enjoy it.
