A credit to Lofthouse! In an era where short stories find themselves increasingly out of vogue, it's rare to see a talented writer publish a collection. Rarer still to find that each story actually be worth a read!
Not to bury the lead, what I found Lofthouse to do consistently well throughout the collection was character creation and development. As those who have tried will tell you, there exists precious little time to flesh out characters within short stories and so each sentence must be put to good use. Too much fluff and you're left with a short story where not much happens between characters who you only partially understand! Fortunately, Lofthouse gets this right. Like many strong fiction writers, he has a knack for fleshing out his characters by the nuanced way they engage with the people and environment around them. This has the effect of quickly bringing the reader into the characters world where we can then enjoy the story from their perspective.
There's something for everyone among these stories, but I've got say my personal favourites were "Old Ladies Dream" and "Lost Little Superman". I won't give anything away, but for me these two stories are great examples of Lofthouse at his best: great, novel characters, strong storylines and hardly a word out of place.
For short story fans I can't recommend Lofthouse enough. 5/5 stars for me. If we're lucky Lofthouse will turn his talents to this space again and we'll get a second volume
